| Despite the historical knowledge on amphibians of the Purus River basin, basic information on assemblages is fragmented, with gaps in knowledge existing at various scales, which limits conservation strategies. This study provides information on the composition, richness and abundance of the amphibian fauna in varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River between the Boca do Acre and Pauiní municipalities, Amazonas, Brazil. We sampled six oxbow lakes using forty-seven 200-meter transects, distributed among the "floating meadows," "high varzea" and "low varzea," from April to January 2014. | This study assesses the change in fish exploitation patterns of the sábalo fisheries of the lower Paraná River basin based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators. From historical catch records, we recorded a shift from a lightly and moderate exploited status before 2001 to a heavily exploited one, as a result of the development of sábalo exports from 2001 onwards. Channel and floodplain connectivity indices demonstrated that the Paraná exhibited highly favorable hydrological conditions between 1972 and 1999 but more adverse conditions from 1999 to 2009, as a consequence of flood pulses reduction coincident with a fishing mortality increment. | This is a study with temporal approach on the community of periphytic algae in the upper Paraná riverfloodplain, inserted in the Long-Term Ecological Research/CNPq, site 6. We sought to evaluate the community structure of periphytic algae, analyze the influence of abiotic factors on this structuring, and determine a model for the density of the phycoperiphyton community in 11 years of study. | Este estudo aborda a variação temporal (sazonal, semanal e nictemeral) e espacial de algumas variáveis limnológicas na região limnética do lago Catalão, um lago da planície de inundação do rio Amazonas. | The subfamily Iguanodectinae comprises a group of small Neotropical fishes composed by two genera and 11 nominal species widely distributed in the Atlantic drainages of South America. Piabucus is the only genus of Iguanodectinae found in the Paraguay River basin, especially in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso State, where it is represented by Piabucus melanostomus. | We conducted a study to test the hypothesis that interconnectedness among island floodplain lakes and the adjacent Solimões River during the flood stage of the hydrologic cycle is enough to maintain similarity in fish species assemblages. Gill net samples were collected during high and low water periods for three consecutive years (July 2004 to July 2006) in four lakes on Paciência Island. | This study assessed the coexistence of three species of thraira present in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, using population structure as an investigation tool. The species were designated as: Hoplias sp. 1, introduced after the construction of the Itaipu reservoir, and Hoplias sp. 2 and Hoplias sp. 3, native species that have been identified as Hoplias aff. malabaricus. | Rotifers have often been used as indicators of sudden changes in physical and chemical features of the aquatic environment. Such features vary greatly during flood pulse events in small lakes connected to major floodplains. However, few are the studies that investigate the consequences of the flood pulse in rotifer species composition, abundance, richness and diversity, especially in Amazonian lakes.
