Amphibians of varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Ramalho,Werther Pereira; Andrade,Murilo Sousa; Matos,Lucicléia Railene Assis de; Vieira,Lisandro Juno Soares.
Despite the historical knowledge on amphibians of the Purus River basin, basic information on assemblages is fragmented, with gaps in knowledge existing at various scales, which limits conservation strategies. This study provides information on the composition, richness and abundance of the amphibian fauna in varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River between the Boca do Acre and Pauiní municipalities, Amazonas, Brazil. We sampled six oxbow lakes using forty-seven 200-meter transects, distributed among the "floating meadows," "high varzea" and "low varzea," from April to January 2014. We recorded 59 species, with the family Hylidae being predominant. This amphibian fauna represents approximately 19% of the species...

Assessment of sábalo (Prochilodus lineatus) fisheries in the lower Paraná River basin (Argentina) based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators Neotropical Ichthyology
Baigún,Claudio; Minotti,Priscilla; Oldani,Norberto.
This study assesses the change in fish exploitation patterns of the sábalo fisheries of the lower Paraná River basin based on hydrological, biological, and fishery indicators. From historical catch records, we recorded a shift from a lightly and moderate exploited status before 2001 to a heavily exploited one, as a result of the development of sábalo exports from 2001 onwards. Channel and floodplain connectivity indices demonstrated that the Paraná exhibited highly favorable hydrological conditions between 1972 and 1999 but more adverse conditions from 1999 to 2009, as a consequence of flood pulses reduction coincident with a fishing mortality increment. A total catch of 15,000 tons, including local consumption, regional market, informal sales, and...

Carapunarla, Luciana; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Baumgartner, Dirceu; Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná; Rodrigues, Liliana; Universidade Estadual de Maringá.
This is a study with temporal approach on the community of periphytic algae in the upper Paraná riverfloodplain, inserted in the Long-Term Ecological Research/CNPq, site 6. We sought to evaluate the community structure of periphytic algae, analyze the influence of abiotic factors on this structuring, and determine a model for the density of the phycoperiphyton community in 11 years of study. Samples were taken in two periods of the year (February/March and August/September) at PatosLake, lentic environment between 1999 and 2009, using as substrate the petiole of Eichhornia azurea Kunth. The highest density was found in February 2002, after a long dry period. The lowest density was observed in March 2005, period with the highest richness in the study (165...

Feeding ecology of Serrasalmus gouldingi (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) in the lower Anapu River region, Eastern Amazon, Brazil Acta Amazonica
PRUDENTE,Bruno da S.; CARNEIRO-MARINHO,Pedro; VALENTE,Roberta de M.; MONTAG,Luciano F. de A..
Abstract Studies on feeding ecology of fishes are important to understand the relationship between species and environmental seasonal variations. In tropical rivers, these relationships are mainly modeled by hydrological patterns. Thereby, this study aimed to assess the influence of fluviometric variation and life stage (juveniles and adults) in the feeding ecology of Serrasalmus gouldingi in the lower Anapu River region, located in Eastern Amazon, Pará, Brazil. Specimens were collected bimonthly, considering four different hydrological periods. We assessed the diet composition, feeding intensity and niche breadth of the species. Thirty-two dietary items were identified and grouped into ten categories. A total of 279 stomachs were analyzed, showing a...

Fish beta diversity responses to environmental heterogeneity and flood pulses are different according to reproductive guild Neotropical Ichthyology
Gutiérrez C,Ángela; Ortega,Jean Carlo Gonçalves; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio.
ABSTRACT In floodplain communities, beta diversity is influenced by different factors; however, environmental heterogeneity and floods are believed to be particularly influential. The influence of environmental heterogeneity and floods on beta diversity may vary among guilds that present different ecological traits. This study evaluated the correlation between the environmental heterogeneity and flood periods and the beta diversity of trophic and reproductive guilds of fish assemblages. Sampling was conducted quarterly between 2000 and 2012 in the upper Paraná River floodplain. The environmental heterogeneity and period (i.e., dry or flood) were associated with the beta diversity of each guild based on the results of generalized least squares linear...

Genetic structure of the ornamental tetra fish species Piabucus melanostomus Holmberg, 1891 (CHARACIDAE, IGUANODECTINAE) in the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands inferred by mitochondrial DNA sequences Biota Neotropica
Borba,Rafael Splendore de; Silva,Edson Lourenço da; Ponzetto,Josi Margarete; Pozzobon,Allan Pierre Bonetti; Centofante,Liano; Alves,Anderson Luis; Parise-Maltempi,Patrícia Pasquali.
The subfamily Iguanodectinae comprises a group of small Neotropical fishes composed by two genera and 11 nominal species widely distributed in the Atlantic drainages of South America. Piabucus is the only genus of Iguanodectinae found in the Paraguay River basin, especially in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso State, where it is represented by Piabucus melanostomus. Given the wide distribution and the low dispersion capacity of this species, due the ecological constraints, it is possible that many interesting genetic features could be found in different populations. In this way, the aim of his work was to perform the phylogeographic pattern of P. melanostomus populations using mitochondrial DNA sequences. A total of 13 individuals from three rivers belonging the...

Interconnectedness during high water maintains similarity in fish assemblages of island floodplain lakes in the Amazonian Basin Rev. Bras. Zool.
Freitas,Carlos Edwar de C.; Siqueira-Souza,Flávia K.; Guimarães,Alan Rezk; Santos,Fabiane A.; Santos,Ivanildo L.A..
We conducted a study to test the hypothesis that interconnectedness among island floodplain lakes and the adjacent Solimões River during the flood stage of the hydrologic cycle is enough to maintain similarity in fish species assemblages. Gill net samples were collected during high and low water periods for three consecutive years (July 2004 to July 2006) in four lakes on Paciência Island. Two lakes, Piranha and Ressaca, are connected to the river all year, and the other two, Preto and Cacau, which are in the center of the island, are isolated during low water periods. The abundance, species richness and evenness of the fish assemblages in these lakes did not differ according to their relative positions or the season of the hydrological cycle, which...

Periphytic algae in a floodplain lake and river under low water conditions Biota Neotropica
Bichoff,Andressa; Osório,Nicolli Cristina; Dunck,Bárbara; Rodrigues,Liliana.
Abstract Drought events will become more frequent due the climate change. In floodplains, periphytic algae are responsible for part of the primary production, are the principal source of organic carbon deposition, play an important role in mineralization and nutrient cycling, and are the base of the food web for many organisms. As algae distribution in aquatic environments is a strong indicator of physical and chemical conditions of the sites, we aimed to determine the structure of periphytic algae in lentic and lotic environments during drought conditions and to uncover the main local abiotic factors in community structuring. We hypothesized diatoms would be more frequent than green algae and desmids at both sites, due to their resistance characteristics,...

Seasonal fluctuation of some limnological variables on a floodplain lake (Patos lagoon) of the Upper Paraná River, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil BABT
Rodrigues,Luzia Cleide; Train,Sueli; Roberto,Maria do Carmo; Pagioro,Thomaz Aurélio.
Temporal variations of some limnological variables in limnetic and littoral regions of Patos lagoon, a "várzea" lake on the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River (22(0) 43'12"S e 53(0) 17'37"W), were studied in relation to hydrological and climatological factors. Measurements of water temperature, euphotic zone, suspended material, electrical conductivity, total alkalinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, total nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, reactive soluble phosphorus and chlorophyll a were taken monthly between March 1993 and February 1994. Results lend evidence to the importance of the hydrological regime on the dynamic of limnological variables in floodplain lakes. A dilution of nutrients in the lagoon,...

Seasonal variation in fish trophic networks in two clear-water streams in the Central Llanos region, Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology
Peterson,Christopher C.; Keppeler,Friedrich W.; Saenz,David E.; Bower,Luke M.; Winemiller,Kirk O..
ABSTRACT Food webs are not static entities; consumer resource interactions vary in both time and space, which complicates depiction and comparisons of food web structures. We estimated fish assemblage structure and diets in two clear-water streams in the Venezuelan Llanos region (Charcote and Charcotico) and constructed trophic networks (sub-webs defined by fishes as the principal consumers) during four periods of the annual flood pulse. As stream conditions changed from high-water to low-water, we hypothesized that: 1) the piscivore-non-piscivore ratio would increase; 2) dietary diversity would decrease; 3) interspecific dietary overlap would decline; 4) fewer allochthonous food items would be consumed; and 5) food-web connectance would increase. The...

Species of the Hoplias aff malabaricus complex (Characiformes: Erythrinidae): An investigation of coexistence in a Neotropical floodplain Rev. Bras. Zool.
Hauser,Marília; Benedito,Evanilde.
This study assessed the coexistence of three species of thraira present in the Upper Paraná River floodplain, using population structure as an investigation tool. The species were designated as: Hoplias sp. 1, introduced after the construction of the Itaipu reservoir, and Hoplias sp. 2 and Hoplias sp. 3, native species that have been identified as Hoplias aff. malabaricus. We tested the hypothesis that those species in fact differ from each other in respect of population abundance, sex ratio, relative frequency of adults and juveniles, length structure and weight-length relationship. Additionally, possible effects of the flood pulse on the first four of these parameters were investigated. Samples were collected quarterly from March 2006 to December 2007...

The effect of seasonality on the structure of rotifers in a black-water shallow lake in Central Amazonia Anais da ABC (AABC)
NOVA,CLARICE C.; LOPES,VANESSA G.; SOUZA,LEONARDO COIMBRA E; KOZLOWSKY-SUZUKI,BETINA; PEREIRA,TALITA A.A.; BRANCO,CHRISTINA W.C..
Rotifers have often been used as indicators of sudden changes in physical and chemical features of the aquatic environment. Such features vary greatly during flood pulse events in small lakes connected to major floodplains. However, few are the studies that investigate the consequences of the flood pulse in rotifer species composition, abundance, richness and diversity, especially in Amazonian lakes. We analyzed samples from a small blackwater lake of an “igarapé” connected permanently to the Negro river, in Central Amazonia. Samples were taken twice a year for two years, comprising flooding and receding periods of the flood pulse. Rotifer abundance increased significantly after draught events, and electrical conductivity and turbidity were intrinsically...

Using long-term data to predict fish abundance: the case of Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes, Prochilodontidae) in the intensely regulated upper Paraná River Neotropical Ichthyology
Piana,Pitágoras A.; Cardoso,Bárbara F.; Dias,Joilson; Gomes,Luiz C.; Agostinho,Angelo A.; Miranda,Leandro E..
ABSTRACT Populations show spatial-temporal fluctuations in abundance, partly due to random processes and partly due to self-regulatory processes. We evaluated the effects of various external factors on the population numerical abundance of curimba Prochilodus lineatus in the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, over a 19-year period. Panel data analysis was applied to examine the structure of temporal and spatial abundance while controlling auto-regressive processes and spatial non-homogeneity variances that often obscure relationships. As sources of population variation, we considered predation, competition, selected abiotic variables, construction of a dam upstream of the study area, water level and flood intensity during the spawning period. We found...
